Notified area for the month of May at the same level as May 2022

Latest statistics from the Swedish Forest Agency show that the area notified for felling in May was unchanged, compared to May 2022. However, the regional variations are large. The area of applications for permits for final felling in montane forests was almost three times as large as in the same month last year.

Experience regarding statistics on notifications and applications show that they can vary from month to month due to the forestry planning of various actors. One should therefore be cautious and refrain from drawing conclusions about the planned felling.

The area of notified logging and permits applied for was 19,126 hectares in May, which was unchanged, compared to May 2022. Of this area, applications for permits for final felling of montane forests was 1,167 hectares, compared with 433 hectares in the same month last year.

Compared to the average area in notifications and applications for the country in May over the past five years, this is a decrease of 3 percent. Compared to the average area for the last ten years, this is a decrease of 7 percent.

Notifications and applications on regional level in May

In total, the area in notifications and applications increased in May in Northern Norrland and in Götaland. In Southern Norrland and in Svealand however, the area decreased, compared with May last year.

  • Northern Norrland – increase by 1,760 hectares (+64 percent)
  • Southern Norrland – decrease by 1,356 hectares (-23 percent)
  • Svealand – decrease by 1,083 hectares (-16 percent)
  • Götaland – increase by 633 hectares (+17 percent)

So far this year, the area covered by notifications and applications has increased by 20 percent

In January to May, the area in notifications and applications for permits for final felling has increased by 20 percent, compared to the same period last year. So far this year, the area of applications for permits for final felling of montane forests is 7,961 hectares, in the corresponding period last year the area was 2,304 hectares.

In Northern Norrland, the area notified and applied for has increased by 64 percent, in Southern Norrland by 21 percent and in Götaland by 21 percent. In Svealand however it has decreased by 2 percent, compared to the first five months of the year 2022.

Compared to the average area of notifications and applications for the country in the first five months of the year in the last five years, the increase is 6 percent. Compared to the last ten years, the increase is 7 per cent.

Explanation

Increased or decreased area in notifications and applications for permits for final felling does not necessarily mean that the area of actual final felling has increased or decreased to the same extent.
Statistics refer to total notifications for felling and applications for permission on productive forest land for final felling in montane forest and valuable broad-leaved forest.
