Notified area for the month of August increased compared to August 2022

The latest statistics from the Swedish Forest Agency show that the area notified for felling in August increased, compared to August 2022. However, regional variations are still large. The area regarding applications for permits for final felling in montane forests was only one-eighth of the same month last year.

Experience has shown that statistics regarding notifications and applications can vary from month to month due to the forestry planning of various actors. It is important to therefore be careful when analyzing the monthly data and to not draw conclusions about the planned felling.

The area of notified logging and permits applied for was 26,017 hectares in August, which was an increase of 20 percent, compared to August 2022. Of this area, applications for permits for final felling of montane forests was 145 hectares, compared with 1,117 hectares in the same month last year.

Compared to the average area of notifications and applications for the country in August over the past five years, this is an increase of 2 percent. Compared to the average area for the last ten years, this is an increase of 3 percent.

Notifications and applications on the regional level in August

In total, the area in notifications and applications increased in August in Northern Norrland and in Götaland. In Southern Norrland and in Svealand however, the area decreased, compared with August last year.

  • Northern Norrland – increase by 3,909 hectares (+81 percent)
  • Southern Norrland – decrease by 1,130 hectares (-17 percent)
  • Svealand – decrease by 806 hectares (-13 percent)
  • Götaland – increase by 2,382 hectares (+59 percent)

So far this year, the area covered by notifications and applications has increased by 19 percent.

n January to August, the area in notifications and applications for permits for final felling has increased by 19 percent, compared to the same period last year. So far this year, the area of applications for permits for final felling of montane forests is 9,874 hectares, in the corresponding period last year the area was 4,030 hectares.

In Northern Norrland, the area notified and applied for has increased by 60 percent, in Southern Norrland by 7 percent and in Götaland by 31 percent. In Svealand however, it has decreased by 3 percent, compared to the first eight months of the year 2022.

Compared to the average area of notifications and applications for the country in the first eight months of the year in the last five years, the increase is 2 percent. Compared to the last ten years, the increase is 3 percent.

Explanation

Increased or decreased area in notifications and applications for permits for final felling does not necessarily mean that the area of actual final felling has increased or decreased to the same extent.

Statistics refer to total notifications for felling and applications for permission on productive forest land for final felling in montane forest and valuable broad-leaved forest.
