                        • An increase in notified felling in January

                          The latest statistics from the Swedish Forest Agency show that the area notified or applied for felling in January increased 30 percent, compared to January 2024. The area regarding applications for permits for final felling in montane forests increased 45 percent, compared to the same month last year.

                          The stocks of softwood sawlogs on 31 December were slightly lower than at the turn of last year and significantly lower than the average for the past five years, according to the Swedish Forest Agency's stock survey.

                        • Continued increase in infringement compensation

                          In 2024, the Swedish Forest Agency paid out nearly SEK 324 million in infringement compensation to landowners for denied felling permission in montane forests. This marks a continued increase since 2020, when the first compensation payments totalling SEK 3 million were issued. At the same time, the area designated for the establishment of formally protected areas by the Swedish Forest Agency decreased in 2024 to the lowest level since 1996.
