The felling is expected to decrease in 2026

This year's felling is expected to be 2.4 million cubic meters lower than in 2025, according to a new forecast from the Swedish Forest Agency.

According to the Swedish Forest Agency's forecast, the gross felling in 2026 is estimated to approximately 84.6 million cubic meters standing volume. This represents a 3 percent decrease compared to 2025, when the total gross felling amounted to 87.0 million cubic meters. The estimated decline is explained by changes in roundwood supply and roundwood demand in the Swedish wood-processing industry.

The harvest of coniferous sawlogs is expected to decrease by 1.3 million cubic meters (m³fub), corresponding to a decline of 4 percent compared to 2025. Production of sawn wood products in the Swedish forest industry is expected to decrease by 4.5 percent this year. However, as exports of sawlogs are projected to increase, the domestic harvest of sawlogs is not expected to decline to the same extent.

The harvest of pulpwood is expected to decrease by 0.8 million cubic meters (m³fub) this year, corresponding to a 2 percent decline compared to 2025. Pulpwood harvests are projected to decrease even though the forest industry's pulp production is expected to remain largely unchanged from 2025 levels. The pulp industry's demand for pulpwood is expected to be met through reductions in stocks and increased imports.

Firewood harvest in 2026 is estimated to be unchanged compared to 2026.

The Swedish Forest Agency's forecast is based, among other factors, on assessments of developments in production within the Swedish sawmill industry and the pulp and paper industry. For this year's forecast, these assessments are subject to considerable uncertainty due to the current market situation and external factors. Changes in roundwood flows from the removal of windthrown timber following the storms Johannes and Dave have also made this year's forecast more uncertain than in previous years.

Gross felling: Total harvested trunk volume, including trunks not removed from the forest. Measured in cubic meters standing volume (m3sk) which means the trunk volume above the stump including top and bark but excluding branches.

The Swedish Forest Agency annually produces a forecast for this year's felling. The forecast which is reported to UNECE/FAO is based on forecasts and assessments of production in sawmills, pulp production, consumption of roundwood for energy purposes, foreign trade of roundwood and stock levels of roundwood.
