Increase in notified area for June and July

The l most recent statistics from the Swedish Forest Agency show that the area notified for felling in June and July increased 8 percent, compared to the corresponding months in 2024. The area regarding applications for permits for final felling in montane forests decreased 22 percent, compared to June and July last year.

Experience regarding statistics on notifications and applications show that they can vary from month to month due to the forestry planning of various stakeholders. One should therefore be cautious and refrain from drawing conclusions about the planned felling.

June

The area of notified logging and permits applied for was 25,146 hectares in June, which was 19 percent more than June 2024. Compared to the average area in notifications and applications for the country in June over the past five years, this is unchanged. Compared to the average area for the last ten years, this is a decrease of 3 percent.

Of this area, applications for permits for final felling of montane forests were 197 hectares, compared with 276 hectares in the same month last year.

Notifications and applications on the regional level in June

In total, the area of notifications and applications increased in June for the whole country, compared with June last year.

  • Northern Norrland – increase of 554 hectares (+10 percent)
  • Southern Norrland – increase of 1,847 hectares (+32 percent)
  • Svealand – increase of 406 hectares (+7 percent)
  • Götaland – increase of 1,142 hectares (+27 percent)

July

The area of notified logging and permits applied for was 15,159 hectares in July, which was 5 percent less than July 2024. Compared to the average area in notifications and applications for the country in July over the past five years, this is a decrease of 14 percent. Compared to the average area for the last ten years, this is a decrease of 20 percent.

Of this area, applications for permits for final felling of montane forests were 182 hectares, compared with 213 hectares in the same month last year.

Notifications and applications on the regional level in July

In total, the area of notifications and applications increased in July in Götaland while they decreased in other parts of the country, compared with July last year.

  • Northern Norrland – decrease of 114 hectares (-3 percent)
  • Southern Norrland – decrease of 692 hectares (-14 percent)
  • Svealand – decrease of 273 hectares (-7 percent)
  • Götaland – increase of 250 hectares (+8 percent)

A 17 percent increase in the area covered by notifications and applications so far this year

For January to July, the area of notifications and applications for permits for final felling was 145,789 hectares, which is an increase of 17 percent, compared to the same period last year. So far this year, the area of applications for permits for final felling of montane forests account for 2,605 hectares, for the corresponding period last year the area was 2,306 hectares.

In Northern Norrland, the area notified and applied for has increased by 20 percent, in Southern Norrland by 27 percent, in Svealand by 10 percent and in Götaland by 9 percent, compared to the corresponding period last year.

Compared to the average area of notifications and applications for the country in the corresponding period for the previous five years, this is a decrease of 9 percent. Also compared to the previous ten years, this is a decrease of 9 percent.

Explanation

An increase or decrease in notifications and applications for permits for final felling does not necessarily mean that the area of actual final felling has increased or decreased to the same extent.

Statistics refer to total notifications for felling and applications for permission on productive forest land for final felling in montane forest and valuable broad-leaved forest.
