In total, forest owners notified and applied for final felling on 252,438 hectares of forest land in 2025, which is an increase of 3 percent in comparison to 2024. Notified area for regeneration felling in normal forest, according to Section 14 of the Forestry Act, increased by 6 percent. The area of applications of regeneration felling in montane forests decreased by 47 percent.
In 2025, the Swedish Forest Agency received 59,582 notifications of regeneration felling in normal forest on a total of 241,646 hectares of forest land. This was an increase of 6 percent compared to 2024 and approximately the same level as in 2023.
In Southern Norrland and in Northern Norrland the area in received notifications increased by 21 and 10 percent respectively, compared to 2024. In Svealand and in Götaland the area decreased by 2 and 3 percent respectively.
Regionally, the largest increase is in Jämtland county, with 35 percent, followed by Gävleborg and Västerbotten counties, both with 13 percent. The largest decrease is found in Gotland county with 19 percent, followed by Södermanland and Jönköping counties, both with 17 percent.
Individual forest owners notified a larger area than other forest owners in 2025 and have done so since 2016. In 2025 individual forest owners notified 135,033 hectares for regeneration felling, which is an increase of 1 percent compared to 2024. Other forest owners notified 106,613 hectares, which is an increase of 15 percent.
The average area in notifications of regeneration felling in 2025 was 4,1 hectares, which is equal to the average for the previous ten years.
In 2025, the area of the application for permits for regeneration felling of montane forest decreased by 47 percent to 4,763 hectares. This can be compared with the average area for the previous ten years, which is 7,360 hectares.
The area of the application for permits for regeneration felling of valuable broad-leaved forest decreased by 22 percent to 975 hectares. This can be compared with the average area for the previous ten years, which is 1,282 hectares.
In 2025, forest owners notified and applied for final felling on 5,056 hectares of forest land for purposes other than timber production. Of this, 4,705 hectares was notified for felling in normal forest, 199 hectares in montane forest and 152 hectares in valuable broad-leaved forest.
Compared to last year, the notified area decreased by 41 percent in normal forest. In valuable broad-leaved forest the area applied for increased almost threefold and in montane forests the area increased to just over double, compared to 2024.
The increased or decreased area in notifications and applications for permits for final felling does not necessarily mean that the area of actual final felling has increased or decreased to the same extent.
Statistics refer to total notifications and applications for permission on forest land for final felling in montane forest and valuable broad-leaved forest.
