Decreased area of notified fellings in November

November saw a decrease in the area notified or applied for felling in November of 19 percent, compared to 2024. The area regarding applications for permits for felling in montane forests decreased 13 percent, compared to the same month last year.

Experience has shown that statistics regarding notifications and applications can vary from month to month due to the forestry planning of various stakeholders. It is therefore important to be careful when analyzing the monthly data and to not draw conclusions about the planned felling.

The area of received notifications and applications for permits for felling was 21,315 hectares in November, which was 19 percent less, compared to November 2024. Of this area, applications for permits for felling of montane forests represented 900 hectares, compared with 1,036 hectares in the same month last year.

Compared to the average area of notifications and applications for the country in November over the previous five years, this is a decrease of 20 percent. Compared to the average area in November for the previous ten years, this is a decrease of 23 percent.

Notifications and applications on the regional level in November

The area of notifications and applications decreased in Southern Norrland, Svealand and in Götaland but increased in Northern Norrland, compared to the same month last year.

  • Northern Norrland – increase of 42 hectares (+1 percent)
  • Southern Norrland – decrease of 1,339 hectares (-18 percent)
  • Svealand – decrease of 1,891 hectares (-28 percent)
  • Götaland – decrease of 1,707 hectares (-30 percent)

A 6 percent increase in the area covered by notifications and applications so far this year

From January to November, the area of notifications and applications for permits for felling was 235,667 hectares, which is an increase of 6 percent compared to the same period last year. So far this year, the area concerning applications for permits for felling of montane forests is 4,659 hectares, for the corresponding period last year the area was 5,961 hectares.

In Northern Norrland, the area notified and applied for has increased by 10 percent and in Southern Norrland by 15 percent. In both Svealand and in Götaland the area has decreased by 1 percent.

The average area of notifications and applications for the country as a whole shows a decrease by 2 percent, compared the corresponding period in the preceding five--year period. Compared to the corresponding period for the previous ten years, this is a decrease of 4 percent.

Explanation

n increase or decrease in notifications and applications for permits for felling does not necessarily mean that the area of actual felling has increased or decreased to the same extent.

Statistics refer to total notifications for felling and applications for permission on productive forest land for felling in montane forest and valuable broad-leaved forest.
