Decline in pulpwood stocks

Nyhet | Statistik - 11 November 2025

Stocks of pulpwood have decreased compared with the previous levels at the end of the previous quarter, according to the Swedish Forest Agency’s stock survey. Stocks of coniferous sawlogs and pulp chips remains at approximately the same level.

As of 30 September 2025, total timber stocks amounted to 8,9 million cubic meters, a total decrease of 8 percent compared with the previous quarter. The decline can be mainly contributed to changes in pulpwood:

  • Pulpwood: 5 million cubic metres (-15 percent)
  • Coniferous sawlogs: 2,7 million cubic metres (+4 percent)
  • Pulp chips: 1,2 million cubic metres (-1 percent)

Increase compared with 2024

Compared with the same period last year, pulpwood stocks have increased by 22 percent, with the largest increase seen for deciduous pulpwood.

Stocks of pulp chips have risen by 61 percent compared with the same period in 2024. The largest increase occurred in timber balance area (VBO) 2, but areas 1 and 3 also showed growth over the same comparison period.

Stocks of coniferous sawlogs remained roughly unchanged. Timber balance areas 1, 3 and 4, have seen increases in stocks stocks, while stocks in timber balance area 2 have decreased compared with the third quarter of 2024.

Stocks of roundwood for energy purposes

The reported volume of roundwood for energy purposes as of September 30 was approximtely 767,000 cubic metres. Please note that the volume only represents the companies included in the Swedish Forest Agency's survey, i.e. larger forest industry companies, pulp industries, sawmills, and purchasing organizations.

The collection of data regarding roundwood for energy purposes began in 2024. The increase compared with the same period last year can be attributed to several companies not responding at that time. Comparisons between years should therefore be interpreted with caution. Although these figures do not yet meet the quality standards required for inclusion in official statistics, we have chosen to publish them due to their general public interest.
