The notified area increases but decreased interest in felling of montane forest

New statistics from the Swedish Forest Agency show that during September 2021, the area in notifications and applications for final felling decreased 14 percent, compared with September 2020. The area applied for final felling of montane forests in September 2021 decreased 94 percent compared with September last year.

In September 2020, more than 8,000 hectares were applied for felling in montane forest in Västerbotten. That was almost 22 percent of the total registered and applied area in the country that month. Applications for felling in montane forest during September 2021 decreased by approximately 7,900 hectares, compared with September 2020. Apart from applications for felling in montane forest, the total notified and applied area increases by 9 percent.

Notifications and applications in 2021

The total area in notifications and applications in the first nine months of the year 2021, amounted to 206,045 hectares. This is 4 percent more compared with the first nine months of 2020. Applications for final felling of montane forests during the same period amounted to 7,974 hectares, which is 26 percent smaller area than the first nine months of 2020. See Table 1.

21 percent increase in Götaland

Notified and applied area during the first nine months of 2021 increased by 21 percent in Götaland and by 7 percent in Svealand, compared with the same period 2020. In Södra Norrland, notified and applied area decreased by 2 percent, compared with the same period 2020.

In Northern Norrland, notified and applied area decreased by 14 percent compared with the same period 2020. The decrease is mainly due to the decreased area, by 55 percent, in applications for final felling of montane forests. In terms of only notifications of final felling, the area decreased by only 3 percent.

73 percent increase in Halland county

At county level, the total notified and applied area increased in 15 of 21 counties in the first nine months of 2021. The largest increase was in Halland County, with r3 percent. In Jönköping and Stockholm counties, the increases were 36 to 37 percent. In the counties of Gävleborg, and Västerbotten however, the notified and applied area decreased by 18 and 23 percent, respectively, compared with the first nine months of 2020.

In Jämtland County, applications for final felling of montane forests account for the increase, which is 11 per cent compared with the same period in 2020. In terms of only notifications of final felling, the increase was 3 per cent.

Statistics refer to total notifications and applications for permission in productive forest land for final felling in montane forest and valuable broad-leaved forest.
