Storms behind continued strong increase in notified area of final felling
The notified area of final felling increased by 26 percent in January compared with the corresponding month in 2018. Consequently, the notifications to Swedish Forest Agency continue to increase sharply, according to Swedish Forest Agency's statistics. The Southern and Central parts of the country had their highest monthly recorded data for January in the last 12 years.
The total notified area amounted to 25,615 hectares and the increase is partly due to the storms Alfrida and Jan. The notified area of final felling increased in all regions except for the region South of Northern Sweden where it decreased by 6 percent. In the region North of Sweden, it increased by 38 per cent to 4,742 hectares.
In the region Central Sweden, the notified area of final felling increased by 38 percent and amounted to 7,431 hectares, which is the highest monthly recorded data for January since 2007. In the region South of Sweden, the increase was 24 percent and amounted to 9,301 hectares. This is also the highest monthly recorded data for January since 2007
On county level, the notified area of final felling increased in 17 of 21 counties. The largest increase was in Stockholm County by more than four times. The corresponding increase in Uppsala, Östergötland and Västerbotten counties was 83 per cent in each county and is the monthly recorded data for January since 2007. Stockholm, Uppsala and Östergötland counties probably have higher notified area of final felling due to the storm Alfrida. In Västerbotten County area also increased is partly due to the storm Jan.
In Västernorrland County, the notified area of final felling decreased by 36 percent.
Statistics refer to total notifications and applications for permission in productive forest land for final felling
