Increase in area notified for final felling in March

New statistics from the Swedish Forest Agency show that the area notified for felling in March was 36 percent larger than in March 2022. The area of applications for permits for final felling in montane forests was almost six times as large.

Experience regarding statistics on notifications and applications show that they can vary from month to month due to the forestry planning of various actors. One should therefore be cautious and refrain from drawing conclusions about the planned felling.

The area of notified logging and permits applied for was 21,864 hectares in March, which was 36 percent more than in March 2022. Of this area, applications for permits for final felling of montane forests was 3,125 hectares, compared with 545 hectares in the same month last year.

Compared to the average area in notifications and applications for the country in March over the past five years, this is an increase of 13 percent. Compared to the average area for the last ten years, this is an increase of 23 percent.

Notifications and applications on regional level in March

In total, the area in notifications and applications increased in March by 2,252 hectares (74 percent) in Northern Norrland and by 1,732 hectares (44 percent) in Southern Norrland. In Götaland the increase was1,220 hectares (29 percent) and in Svealand 596 hectares (12 percent), compared with March last year.

So far this year, the area covered by notifications and applications has increased by 28 percent

In January to March, the area in notifications and applications for permits for final felling has increased by 28 percent, compared to the same period last year. So far this year, the area of applications for permits for final felling of montane forests is 6,433 hectares, in the corresponding period last year the area was 1,433 hectares.

In Northern Norrland, the area notified and applied for has increased by 73 percent and in Southern Norrland by 46 percent. In Götaland, the increase is 17 percent and in Svealand 4 percent, compared to the first three months of the year 2022.

Compared to the average area of notifications and applications for the country in the first three months of the year in the last five years, the increase is 11 percent. Compared to the last ten years, the increase is 17 per cent.

Explanation

Increased or decreased area in notifications and applications for permits for final felling does not necessarily mean that the area of actual final felling has increased or decreased to the same extent.

Statistics refer to total notifications for felling and applications for permission on productive forest land for final felling in montane forest and valuable broad-leaved forest.
