Increase in area notified for final felling in February

New statistics from the Swedish Forest Agency show that the area notified for felling in February was 32 percent larger than in February 2022. The area of applications for permits for final felling in montane forests was more than four times as large.

Experience regarding statistics of notifications and applications shows that it can vary from month to month due to the forestry planning of various actors. One should therefore be cautious and hold off on drawing conclusions about the planned felling.

The area of notified logging and permits applied for was 23,342 hectares in February, which was 32 percent more than in February 2022. Of this area, applications for permits for final felling of montane forests was 2,993 hectares, compared with 685 hectares in the same month last year.

Compared to the average area in notifications and applications for the country in February over the past five years, this is an increase of 23 percent. Compared to the average area for the last ten years, this is an increase of 35 percent.

Notifications and applications on regional level

In total, the area in notifications and applications increased in February by 3,131 hectares (113 percent) in Northern Norrland, by 2,453 hectares (73 percent) in Southern Norrland and by 121 hectares (2 percent) in Götaland. In Svealand, on the other hand, the area decreased by 42 hectares (1 percent), compared with February last year.

So far this year, the area covered by notifications and applications has increased by 24 percent

In January and February, the area in notifications and applications for permits for final felling has increased by 24 percent, compared to the same period last year. So far this year, the area of applications for permits for final felling of montane forests is 3,295 hectares, in the corresponding period last year the area was 888 hectares.

In Södra Norrland, the area notified and applied for has increased by 47 percent, in Norra Norrland by 24 percent and in Götaland by 13 percent compared to the first two months of the year 2022. In Svealand, however, the area has decreased by 1 percent.

Compared to the average area of notifications and applications for the country in the first two months of the year in the last five years, the increase is 10 percent. Compared to the last ten years, the increase is 14 percent.

Explanation

Increased or decreased area in notifications and applications for permits for final felling does not necessarily mean that the area of actual final felling has increased or decreased to the same extent.

Statistics refer to total notifications for felling and applications for permission on productive forest land for final felling in montane forest and valuable broad-leaved forest.
