Decrease in area of forest notified for final felling in April

In April 2022 the area covered by notifications and applications for permits of final felling was down by 28 percent compared with April 2021, according to new statistics from the Swedish Forest Agency. The area covered by applications in montane forests was 52 percent smaller compared to April last year.

The total area covered by applications and notifications in April for the whole country amounted to 13,107 hectares, which was 28 percent less than in April 2021. Of this area, applications for permits for final felling of montane forest amounted to 436 hectares, which was 52 percent less than the same month last year.

At county level, the notified and applied area decreased in 17 of 21 counties

In 14 counties, the decreases were over 29 percent. The largest decreases were in the counties of Skåne, Kalmar, Gotland, Östergötland and Jönköping, where the decreases were over 50 percent, compared with April 2021. In the counties of Stockholm, Örebro and Södermanland, on the other hand, there were large increases (63, 40 and 36 per cent respectively).

In total, the area covered by notifications and applications decreased in April by 50 percent in Götaland compared with April last year. In Southern and Northern Norrland, the area decreased by 26 and 23 percent, respectively, and in Svealand by 8 percent.

So far this year, the area covered by notifications and applications has decreased by 15 percent

During January to April, notifications and applications for permits for final felling have decreased by 15 percent compared with the same period last year. Applications for permits for final felling of montane forests have decreased by 54 percent.

In Götaland, the notified and applied area has decreased by 31 percent, in Southern Norrland by 16 percent and in Svealand by 2 percent compared to the first four months of the year 2021. In Northern Norrland, notifications and applications for permits for final felling have increased by 3 percent.
