Continued increased interest in felling montane forest
In May 2021 the area of notifications and applications for permits for final felling increased by 27 percent compared with May 2020, according to new statistics from the Swedish Forest Agency. The area of applications in montane forests was just over three times larger compared with May last year.
The total area of applications and notifications in the first five months 2021 for the whole country amounted to 94,433 hectares. That is a 6 percent increase compared with the first five months 2020. Applications for final felling of montane forests amounted to 4,550 hectares, which is more than a fivefold increase compared with the first five months 2020.
If montane forests were excluded the total increased area applied for and notified for is only 1 percent larger than the corresponding period in 2020. See Table 1.
Large increase in Götaland
Notified and applied area in the first five months 2021 increased by 23 percent in Götaland and by 4 percent in Southern Norrland, compared with the first five months 2020. In Northern Norrland, the notified and applied area decreased by 6 percent and in Svealand by 4 percent compared with the corresponding period in 2020.
At county level, the notified area increased in 12 of 21 counties
During the first five months 2021, the increase was greatest in the county of Halland, by 62 percent. The increase was also large in the counties of Jämtland, Kalmar, Blekinge, Kronoberg, Stockholm and Jönköping, by 26-39 percent. In Jämtland County the increase is due to the applications for final felling in montane forests. Montane forests excluded, the notifications decreased by 12 percent in Jämtland County, compared with the first five months 2020.
