Record-breaking applications for permits for final felling of montane forest

Nyhet | Statistik - 13 October 2020

New statistics from the Swedish Forest Agency show that forest owners in Sweden notified a significantly larger area for final felling in September 2020 compared with September 2019. The large increase is due to the fact that forest owners have applied for logging permits over large areas of montane forest, in total 8 408 hectares.

The total notified area in September in the whole country amounted to 37 290 hectares, which is 32 percent more than in September 2019.  The increase is only 3% if permits for felling of montane forests are not considered

In Svealand, the increase is 21%, while in Södra Norrland a smaller area (-18%) was notified in September 2020 than during the corresponding period in 2019.

So far this year, 199,023 hectares have been notified for felling, which is 2 percent less than in the first nine months last year.

Decreased notified area for final felling in 11 out of 21 counties

During the first eight months of the year, the decrease was greatest in Stockholm (-40%) and Kronoberg County (-25%). In nine counties, the notified area has increased during the same period, compared with 2019.

Statistics refer to total notifications and applications for permission in productive forest land for final felling and applications for permission for other purposes than final felling.

The survey is part of Official Statistics of Sweden.
