Background
The North Sea Region is frequently haunted by storms that cause wind damage to the forests. These problems can cause severe economical losses for landowners, the forest industry, the infrastructure and for the society in general. Devastating storms have occurred on numerous occasions, the most recent in December 1999 and in January 2005.
STORMRISK will integrate knowledge!
The countries within the North Sea Region have throughout history been subject to forest wind damage in various degrees. Experiences and expertise on how to reduce storm felling in forest landscapes have developed differently in the different countries.
The main aim of the STORMRISK project is to integrate and make accessible the knowledge and experience developed over decades to end-users in the North Sea Region.
Planning for the future
Coming climate changes could lead to a future with increased storm frequency. It is therefore necessary to adapt forest management so that severe wind damage to natural and cultural landscapes are minimised.
