Definitions used in connection to forestry employment statistics.
Forest Work
Cutting, silvicultural work and other forestry related work as timber measurement, taxation, forest road work, inventories and ditching is included in forest work.
Large Scale Forestry
The large scale forestry is defined as companies with at least 10 employed forest workers or companies with a large forest holding. The area limit is 5 000 hectares but that number can vary between different parts of the country. The decision on which companies that is included in this definition is taken in consultation with the Swedish Forest Agency. The basic data for these decisions are the Swedish Forest Agency´s examinations about performed measures in forestry.
Forest Contractors
This group includes companies that operate in other owners forests, excluding companies included in large scale forestry. If a company also have own forest land is it also included in the small scale forestry, but then only concerning their operations in own forest.
Small Scale Forestry
Management units that are not included in large scale forestry and that are at least 5 hectare forest land are defined as small scale forestry.
Personal Management/Self Employment
Forest work performed by the forest owner, family member or employees appointed by the owner is included in personal management. Personal management is used within small scale forestry.
Self employment is forest work, on own or others forest land, performed by personnel were the company is responsible employer. Self employment is used within the large scale forestry.
Work Appointment
One work appointment equals one person employed in forest work by a company, personnel working exclusively as foremen are excluded from this group.
When a person has been employed by more than one company during a year has every position been counted as one work appointment.
Management Unit (small scale forestry)
One management unit is agriculture properties in the same municipality with same owner, one or more.
